THE CHRISTIAN'S WARDROBE

"...clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." (Col. 3:12b NIV).
Not long ago we were discussing the Christian's armor (Eph. 6). But today we take a look at the Christian's wardrobe. Ever since Eden God has been clothing His people. Paul has already suggested the idea that we get dressed spiritually. "Put on the new self" (v. 10). None of us would think of leaving the house naked. In this verse Paul suggests five outfits - one for each work day of the week.
Compassion (tenderness of heart) is desperately needed in this world where even infanticide and euthanasia are encouraged. We must be a people of kindness in a world where cruelty takes place every minute. Humility is rarely seen or practiced in our society. We need to show gentleness where others are rude and rough in their speech and conduct. And how important it is to clothe ourselves with patience (longsuffering, forbearance). Impatience is the curse of our generation. Somebody needs to manifest these Christian graces if we would ever make a difference or an impact in this hard-hearted, cruel, proud, intemperate, ungracious generation! "Put on the garments that suit God's chosen people, his own, his beloved" (NEB). Take a look at your spiritual closet. Are these virtues evident in your daily walk?
Hymn/Prayer: "O to be like Thee! Full of compassion, loving, forgiving, tender and kind; Helping the helpless, cheering the fainting, seeking the wandering sinner to find" (Thomas O. Chisholm).
