A REASON NOT TO LIE

Here is yet another reason not to resort to lying. "Do not lie to each other, since you...have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator" (Col. 3:9, 10 NIV).

The "new you" no longer needs to resort to lying. The "new you" no longer wants to lie to anyone for any reason. The truth has set us free. Our lives are now governed by the principle of truth and honesty. This new way of life "is being refitted all the time for closer knowledge, so that the image of the God who created it is its pattern" (Knox).

The fact that we were created in the image of God (Gen. 1:26) and then re-created (refitted, remoulded, renewed) in that same image should inspire and motivate us to stop lying. God does not lie (Titus 1:2) and those who are refitted in His image will not succumb to the temptation to lie, remain silent, or twist the truth. That's what we used to do in our unregenerate life. We have not been born again only to engage in deceit again. The next time you are tempted to lie, stop and ask yourself this question: "Will this reflect the image of the God who created me and then recreated me?" Telling the truth may hurt you with your boss or friends but it will never hurt you with your Creator.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for recreating us once again in Your image. Indeed, You are the God of the second chance. Embolden us by Your Spirit of truth to always speak the truth so that we might be a reflection of You on this earth. Through Christ, who is the Truth, we pray.
