STOP LYING TO EACH OTHER

"Do not lie to one another, for you have stripped off the old (unregenerate) self with its evil practices" (Col. 3:9, The Amplified New Testament).

We are to be a people of the truth. Jesus prayed that His followers would be sanctified by the truth (John 17:17). "Tell the truth," is what my mother always told me. If I was "caught in a lie," I was disciplined for straying from the truth. Lying is just a way of life in politics and business. Paul finds it necessary to remind those in the church to never lie to one another. When we lie we are not just lying to men but unto God. Two members of the church in Jerusalem, Ananias and Sapphira, found this out the hard way (Acts 5:1-11). Their deaths caused great fear to seize the whole church. We should be as afraid.

Our casual, superficial greetings in church may border on lying to one another. Someone asks, "How are you?" We automatically answer, "Fine." Truth be told, we might not be feeling or doing fine at all. If the question was really sincere we might respond with more honesty and openness. William Barclay notes, "It is easy to distort the truth: an alteration in the tone of voice or an eloquent look will do it; and there are silences which can be as false and misleading as any words." The "old man of sin" will resort to lies, spoken or silent. The "new man in Christ" will always be honest. He will speak the truth in love.

Hymn: "Love is much too pure and holy, friendship is too sacred far, for a moment's reckless folly thus to desolate and mar. 'Love one another,' thus saith the Savior; Children, obey the Father's blest command" (D.K.P.)
