TAKE IT TO THE DUMP

"But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips" (Col. 3:8 NIV).
When I was a boy we used to made a trip every so often to the city dump. We had a saying in our house for things we no longer needed or wanted: "We'll take it to the dump." The city dump was a place where good citizens got rid of things they no longer desired. (Today we call these places "sanitary landfills"). Paul tells us to take certain things to the dump. Let's consider them.
Anger. Who needs it? What good does it do? Paul doesn't tell us to manage it or use it creatively (like the pop psychologists tell us). He says, "Take it to the dump!" Rage. We have way too much of that in our society and we don't need any of it in our homes or churches. Take it to the dump. The same with malice. Slander? There is nothing praiseworthy about it. Take it to the dump. Finally, filthy language. Just like rage, we have way too much of it in modern life. You are going to give an account for every word you utter some day. If you are wise you will take filthy language to the dump. And once you take all these things to the dump, leave them there. Don't go back and start rummaging around, looking for things you were supposed to have gotten rid of!
Prayer: Holy Father, may we see sin as You see sin. Grant us the common sense to get rid of everything that is rotten and ruinous in our lives. Make us holy as You are holy. Through Christ we pray.
