WHEN IT"S ALL RIGHT TO KILL

"So kill (deaden, deprive of power) the evil desire lurking in your members - those animal impulses and all that is earthly in you that is employed in sin..." (Col. 3:5a The Amplified New Testament).
This is one time it is all right to kill! The NIV says, "Put to death." The old KJV uses the word "mortify." We get mortician and mortuary from that word. When I was in college I used to work for a mortuary. I get the picture here and I'm sure you do too.
What is it we are to kill - put to death - mortify? William Barclay notes, "The Christian must kill self-centeredness and regard as dead all private desires and ambitions...Everything which would keep him from fully obeying God and fully surrendering to Christ must be surgically excised." We're jumping ahead here but the reason for this drastic measure is explained in verse 6: "Because of these, the wrath of God is coming" (NIV). Discipline yourself now or God will discipline you later. I know which I should do. How about you?
Prayer: Holy Father, help us to do what this text teaches us to do. Instill within us such a desire to be like You that we will gladly and spontaneously put to death those earthly and fleshly inclinations through the power of Christ and the Spirit. Amen.
