WHEN, NOT IF

"When Christ who is our life appears..." (Col. 3:4a NKJV).

Notice the confidence of Paul: "When Christ...appears." The early Christians had a resolute belief in the return of Christ. For them it was a matter of "when," not "if." Christ's second coming was the "blessed hope" of the early church (Titus 2:13). The modern church rarely gives it a thought. We are too caught up in earthly endeavors to even give a fleeting thought to when we will be caught up to be with the Lord forever (1 Thess. 4:17). Think about it. When was the last time you heard a message on the Second Coming of Christ? Or entertained a voluntary serious thought about His return?

"When Christ...appears." Paul told one church (Thessalonica) that they were so well informed on this subject that they had "no need that I should write unto you" (1 Thess. 5:1). He went on to say, "For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night...You, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief" (vs. 2,4). There are more than 300 "advance warnings" in Scripture that Christ will appear a second time. Christ Himself said, "I will come again." It is our sacred duty to be ready when He appears. "Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect" (Matt. 24:44). Maybe we should paint a tiny trumpet or a little cloud on our wristwatches so that whenever we glanced at them we would be reminded that Jesus is coming again!

Hymn: "Marvelous message we bring, glorious carol we sing, wonderful word of the King - Jesus is coming again! Coming again, coming again; may be morning, maybe noon, maybe evening and maybe soon! Coming again, coming again; O what a wonderful day it will be - Jesus is coming again!"
(John W. Peterson)
