THE RIGHT MINDSET

"Set your mind on things that are above, not on things that are on the earth" (Col. 3:2 ESV).
If ever there was a challenge worth taking, it is this one. We are so earthly-minded. Just think about what you think about most of the time. Isn't it the passing things of earth that capture most of our thoughts? So Paul gives us a huge challenge. It involves our mindset. "Set your mind on things above." The KJV says, "Set your affection on things above." J. B. Phillips says, "Give your heart to heavenly things." Do we love the things of heaven more than we do the things this transitory, tinsel-town world has to offer?
Sometimes we have to set our minds to a certain task. My mother used to say, "Victor, set your mind to it." She wanted me to have the right mindset. This calls for spiritual focus. The Amplified Version says, "And set your minds and keep them set on what is above..." We need to focus like a laser beam on things that are above - things like our eternal salvation that awaits us, our loved ones who have died in Christ, the reward that awaits all who are faithful. The right mindset would also include living on a higher plane here on this earth - thinking about things that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report; things that are virtuous and praiseworthy (Phil. 4:8). It's just like cruise control on your car. Set your mind on things above and then keep your mind set on those things!
Hymn/Prayer: "I'm pressing on the upward way, new heights I'm gaining every day - Still praying as I onward bound, 'Lord, plant my feet on higher ground. Lord, lift me up and let me stand by faith on heaven's tableland; a higher plane than I have found - Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.'" (Johnson Oatman, Jr.)
