SEEKING THINGS ABOVE

So much of our time and energy is given to earthly matters. When your nose is kept to the grindstone it is hard to lift your eyes to things above. But that is what Paul is urging us to do in today's text. "If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above..." (Col. 3:1b NKJV).

Living the Risen Life means we will "lift our thoughts above" (Knox). We will "aspire to the realm above" (Phillips). Though our feet are planted on earth our eyes should be raised to heaven, our thoughts should be centered on heavenly things, our mind should be fixed on spiritual and eternal matters. The Amplified reads, "Seek the [rich, eternal treasures] that are above..." It takes will power to do this because we live in a culture that unrelentingly demands our time and thoughts. You are going to have to shut the world out before you can "seek those things which are above." Find a quiet place. Make your place quiet. Turn off the radio or TV. Shut the door. Or get outdoors.  Close your eyes. Rest in the Lord. Wait on the Lord. Open the Bible. Open your heart to God. Make the center of God's will your home. Become "wholly lost" in God. Confess. Sing a hymn. Intercede. Jot down your thoughts. Meditate. Think about heaven, your reward in heaven, those loved ones in heaven that you want to see again. Make a commitment that will last for eternity.

Hymn: "Shut in with Thee, O Lord, forever, My wayward feet no more to roam; What power from Thee my soul can sever? The center of God's will my home. Chorus: Sweet will of God, still fold me closer, Till I am wholly lost in Thee..." (Mrs. C. H. Morris)
