JESUS SHOES

When our son-in-law Brian was a little boy he wore sandals. He called them "Jesus shoes" because he had seen pictures of Jesus wearing sandals. Our text today urges us all to wear "Jesus shoes." "And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace" (Eph. 6:15 KJV).

No soldier went into battle barefooted. His feet would have been crushed, rendering him useless on the march or on the battlefield. Roman sandals were rugged, sturdy footwear. The soldier was constantly on the move and he needed a good pair of shoes. Just as a horse needed to be shod, so did the soldier. So do we as good Christian soldiers.

Notice how Paul links sandals with "readiness to publish the gospel" (Knox). The Christian has good news to share - "the glad-message of peace" (Rotherham). Those who preach the gospel bring peace to many troubled souls. Perhaps that is why Paul writes in Romans 10:15, "How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!" (KJV). If you wear "Jesus shoes," you have beautiful feet.

Hymn: "How lovely on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, good news. Announcing peace, proclaiming news of happiness, Our God reigns, our God reigns..." (Leonard E. Smith, Jr.)
