"...and put on uprightness as your coat of mail" (Eph. 6:14c Goodspeed).
The "coat of mail" is also called "the breastplate of uprightness" (Weymouth). The NEB says, "for [a] coat of mail put on integrity." The NIV calls it "the breastplate of righteousness." Knox calls it "the breastplate of justice."
William Barclay notes, "When a man is clothed in righteousness he is impregnable." Righteousness has been defined as the quality of thinking, acting, and being right. God imputes His righteousness to those who are of faith(Rom. 4:22-24). We do not approach the enemy in our own righteousness, but in His. Who can stand before the Lord? That is why it is so important to don this particular piece of the Christian armor. Upright living will turn the enemy upside down. Every time you practice righteousness you are defeating the devil. Integrity conquers iniquity. Listen up. This is your "mail call." "Put on uprightness as your coat of mail."
Hymn: "When He shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in Him be found; dressed in His righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne. On Christ the solid Rock I stand; all other ground is sinking sand..." (Edward Mote).
