WHEN THE DAY OF EVIL COMES

"Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand" (Eph. 6:13 NIV).
What ominous words those are: when the day of evil comes. When hell unleashes its dogs of war - those "master-spirits of this dark world," those "cosmic powers of this dark world," those "great evil princes of darkness who rule this world," those "spiritual hosts of wickedness in high places," those "malign influences in an order higher than ours," those "spiritual agents from the very headquarters of evil," those "huge numbers of wicked spirits in the spirit world." What are you going to do "when the day of evil comes" your way? And it will, as it already has, as it will continue to do.
There is only one thing you can and must do. For a second time Paul tells the Christians of his day: "Put on the full armor of God." He prefaces that with "Therefore." Because we wrestle against spiritual hosts of evil we had better be equipped for a battle royale. And you must "stand your ground." No buckling, no bending, no surrender, no turning tail, no throwing down the sword. "Even when you have fought to a standstill you may still stand your ground" (J. B. Phillips). Next week we will begin an analysis of each piece of armor and weaponry in "the full armor of God." Don't leave home without it!
Hymn: "And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us. The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him - his rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure: One little word shall fell him" (Martin Luther).
