THE FULL ARMOR OF GOD

You wouldn't think of leaving your house half-dressed. Well, most of us wouldn't. This is summer after all. One of the things I dislike about summer is how people seem to lose their sense of modesty - if they ever had it. But let us hasten to our text for the day. Paul instructs the Christians of his day: "Put on the full armor of God" (Eph. 6:11a NIV).

I think the key word here is "full." Other translations say "complete" armor or "whole" armor. Or perhaps the key phrase might be "of God." The Amplified says, "the armor of a heavily-armed soldier, which God supplies." Paul will repeat this thought in verse 13: "Put on the full armor of God." He is trying to get our attention here. Christian soldiers who are only partially armed for warfare are in peril! Paul will mention six pieces or armor or weaponry in the text. (I think a seventh might be implied in verse 18, prayer, although there is no armor analogy.) The Christian soldier who finds himself or herself on the battlefield with anything less than the FULL armor of God is in danger. "You must wear all the weapons in God's armory" (Knox). Tomorrow we will see the reason why.

Prayer: Our Father in Heaven, thank You for supplying us with a complete set of spiritual armor. Now give us the spiritual sense to put on Your full armor! Through Christ we pray.
