REVERENCING CHRIST

We bring this section (Eph 4:17-5:21) to a close by looking at a verse that could, if applied, solve every church problem in the world. "Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ" (Eph 5:21 NIV).
"Submit." How we despise that word, that order, that command. Knox says, "Submit to each other's rights." But we don't like to do that, do we? As Frank Sinatra sang, "I did it my way!" Sometimes we forget that Christ is the Head of His Church. And that is the key in this verse. We submit to one another out of reverence for Christ! TLB says, "Honor Christ by submitting to each other." We cannot split the church and reverence Christ at the same time. We cannot divide the Body of Christ and honor Christ at the same time. The church in Ephesus received a letter from Christ (Rev 2:1-7). In that letter Christ reminded them, "I know your works." The Christ who walks in the midst of the golden candlesticks knows what is going on. He observes whether or not we are submitting to each other or trying to get our own way. The next time you are tempted to do that, stop and think: "Am I reverencing Christ by this? Does demanding my rights honor Christ?"
Prayer: Holy Father, help us to honor Your Son by submitting to one another in the fear of Christ.
