DESTROYED BY DRINK

"Do not besot yourselves with wine; that leads to ruin" (Eph 5:18a Knox).
No man can count the number of lives ruined by strong drink. The late A. Word "scared me straight" with his descriptive preaching of how alcohol had destroyed many people whom he had known. He should know - he was once a "boozer" and "rum runner" himself. Still, the converted bootlegger was able to lead many out of a life of ruin to redemption in Christ.
This whole section we have been studying (Eph 4:17ff) includes admonitions on how Christians should live (and not live). If drinking was once a part of your life, you should "no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk" (4:17). Once we were darkness but now we are light (5:8). We are to no longer live like fools (5:15). There is nothing more foolish than pouring money down a rat hole and that is what addiction to drink does. God's will (5:17) does not include your getting drunk - "besotting yourselves with wine." I stay away from the stuff and encourage others to do the same. Wine can warp your witness. Worse, it can lead you to everlasting ruin.
Who are the people who are always crying the blues? Who do you know who reeks of self-pity? Who keeps getting beat up for no reason at all? Whose eyes are bleary and bloodshot? It's those who spend the night with a bottle, for whom drinking is a serious business. Don't judge wine by its label, or its bouquet, or its full-bodied flavor. Judge it rather by the hangover it leaves you with - the splitting headache, the queasy stomach. Do you really prefer seeing double, with your speech all slurred, reeling and seasick, drunk as a sailor? 'They hit me,' you'll say, 'but it didn't hurt; they beat on me, but I didn't feel a thing. When I'm sober enough to manage it, bring me another drink!' Proverbs 23:18ff The Message.
