MEMORIAL DAY MUSINGS

Today is Memorial Day. I have good memories of this day on our calendar. I remember by Grandmother Knowles getting up very early on Memorial Day (she always called it Decoration Day), cutting some beautiful pink and white peonies, placing them in a vase, and walking over a mile to place them on the grave of my Grandfather Knowles. When she arrived home she would get out the American flag, attached to a tall bamboo pole, and place in an iron pipe sticking up out of the middle of the yard. This was at her home in Hubbard, Iowa.

My father, 92, is no longer able to travel to Hubbard on Memorial Day so he has a good friend, Viola Lura, place flowers on both my grandparent's graves. May God bless her for doing so.

Two of my uncles served overseas in World War II. Thankfully, they came home safe and sound. But many did not. We honor their memory today in cemeteries all over America. My uncle Boyd, 97, lives in California. I will probably call both Uncle Boyd and Dad on Memorial Day. We may have a cookout with some of our family too. We will fly the flag on both our front porch and back porch. I will pause to remember that freedom's price is sacrifice and thank God for those who made the supreme sacrifice that we might enjoy this day.

"O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife, who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than life! America! America! God mend thine every flaw, confirm thy soul in self control, thy liberty in law!" (Katherine Lee Bates)
