"You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted but its deceitful desires..." (Eph. 4:22 NIV).

Christians have "learned Christ" (v.20) and have been taught the truth by Christ, who is the Truth (v. 21). These three words, "you were taught," should be a good reminder to what we have been taught and who taught us. What is it that we have been taught? In regard to our former way of life, to put off our old self - the old man of sin - that "grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts" (NKJV).

Sometimes I think Christ must be thinking of me, "Didn't I teach you better than that?" Here Paul reminds us that we must continually be "putting off" our old way of thinking, speaking, and behaving. Our old self can deceive us. Our good Teacher, Christ, will never deceive us. What He has taught us will always be true and right.

One Sunday morning I looked out in the audience and spotted one of my teachers from high school, Mrs. Neathammer. Later I asked her why she had driven those hundreds of miles to hear me speak. She told me, "I like to check up on my students who have made something good of their lives." I'm glad I was taught by Mrs. Neathammer. I'm also glad I was taught by Christ. Let us so live as to always make our teacher proud.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for this needed reminder of how we have been taught. Help us to live like Your Son has taught us to live. In His Name we pray.
