THE PATH OF PEACE

Before we begin today's daily Bible study let me say that this is the 500th "Honey from the Rock" devotion I have written and posted. If you are getting some good from these devotions let me hear from you. It is a joy to share them with you.
The third fruit of the Spirit is peace. Before John the Baptist was born, Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, "You will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him...to guide our feet into the path of peace" (Luke 1:76, 79 NIV). The path of peace is a pleasant one to travel. The Hebrew word for peace is "shalom" and is the root for Jerusalem, city of peace. The Greek word for peace is "eirene" and means quietness, rest, or set at one again. We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Rom. 5:1). He makes us one with God and with each other. We get the woman's name Irene from this Greek word. Incidentally, women's names seem to be more conducive to peace: Grace, Patience, Prudence, etc.
The Holy Spirit does not create cacophony, unrest or division. "For God is not a God of disorder but of peace" (1 Cor. 14:33 NIV). As believers "let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification" (Rom. 14:19 NIV). We know what leads to peace and we know what doesn't lead to peace. Here is a peace passage that will lead to unity in the church: "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful" (Col. 3:15 NIV). Let's keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Eph. 4:3) and we will find that the path of peace is indeed a pleasant path.
Prayer: God of Peace, thank You for setting our feet on the pleasant path. Fill us with Your Spirit so that we will always manifest peace, the fruit of the Spirit. Through Christ we pray.
[Don't forget that we would like to hear from you today if these daily Bible studies are a blessing to you. This is Honey from the Rock #500.]
