The second fruit of the Spirit is joy (chara) and means "cheerfulness" or "gladness." What a journey of joy awaits the Christian who has received the gift of the Holy Spirit. That doesn't mean that there won't be trials and tears, heartaches and sorrows. But it does mean that even in the midst of difficulties we will have a deep-down joy that no man can take from us because we have a Helper within us to help us rejoice. Weeping endures for a night but joy comes in the morning (Psalm 30:5).

The Ethiopian eunuch went on his way rejoicing following his baptism (Acts 8:39). What a journey of joy he experience because of the gift of the Spirit. Jesus wants our joy to be full (John 15:11).He wants His joy fulfilled in our lives (John 17:13). The kingdom of God consists of joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17). The Christian can rejoice with "joy unspeakable" (1 Pet. 1:8). What makes you cheerful? What makes you glad? Ultimately it is the Holy Spirit living within you for the fruit of the Spirit is joy! No matter where you find yourself today determine that with the Spirit's help you will "go on your way rejoicing!"

Hymn/Prayer: "Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love. Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above, melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day!"

I do read your devotionals faithfully and gain much from them, but don't often take time to say "thanks." Sometimes they are personally encouraging, somtimes I find an illustration for a lesson, sometimes even a "sermon starter." I apprecate you!
