THE OGRE OF ORGIES

The final "work of the flesh" that Paul mentions is "orgies" (ESV, NIV, The NT: AUV). The Greek word komos means "a revel, carousal." W. E. Vine says that revelings are the consequences of drunkenness. Perhaps that is why Paul listed "drunkenness" and "orgies" back-to-back.
Spring Break is going on as I write this Bible study. Thousands of college students are engaged in drinking binges and carnal carousings on the beaches of Florida. Thank God for the students from Christian colleges who are using Spring Break as a week of evangelism in many parts of the U.S. and other countries! What a contrast! It goes without saying that drunken orgies should not be named once among professing Christians, young or old. A cautionary: if you are not careful you can see a lot on TV that glorifies this kind of debauchery - even news reports. Remember that God will punish not only evildoers of this bad behavior but also those "who have pleasure in them that do them" (Rom. 1:32 KJV). Voyeurism is giving tacit approval to the ogre of orgies.
Prayer of Commitment: Holy Father, "I will set nothing wicked before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me. A perverse heart will shall depart from me; I will not know wickedness" (Psalm 101:3,4 NKJV).
