OUR NATIONAL OBSESSION

We are looking at the "works of the flesh" in Galatians 5:19. One by one the apostle Paul now begins to name some of them. The first three he mentions all fall under the same category: sexual sins. The NIV has "sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery." The Holman Christian Standard Bible has "sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity." You get the picture.

Our nation seems to be totally obsessed with sex. "Sex sells" is the slogan of advertisers. You see it flaunted on billboards, TV ads, and magazine ads. It is the torpid theme of TV and motion pictures. Its rawest form may be on the Internet. Sometimes you even see it in church. I'm in a lot of different churches in my travels and I have seen way too much skin in the house of the Lord. And, to our national shame, we have exported it to other countries I have visited. Marriages and homes are ruined by what the KJV calls "adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness." It leads to abortion, addiction (pornography), and sometimes even murder. The unholy trinity of "unchastity, impurity, indecency" (TCNT) have taken their toll on the nation, the home, and even the church. Great leaders like David and Solomon have fallen victim to the works of the flesh. What will keep you and me free of these sins? We have already seen the answer. "Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh" (5:16 NKJV). Our national obsession does not have to become our spiritual destruction. "Give your minds to the things that are above" (Col. 3:2 Weymouth). Ask your Heavenly Helper, the Holy Spirit, for help.

Hymn: "Take time to be holy, be calm in thy soul; each thought and each motive beneath His control; Thus, led by His Spirit to fountains of love, thou soon shall be fitted for service above" (William D. Longstaff)
