IT'S SO OBVIOUS!

"Anyone can see the kind of behavior that belongs to the lower nature..." (Galatians 5:19-a NEB).

When someone is living according to the flesh it is so obvious! What's on the inside spills over on the outside. And it's not very pretty to behold. "The sins of our earthly nature are unmistakable" (TCNT). The other day I was driving down the road and even though my car windows were closed I could smell a horrible odor. Something was dead near the highway. Buzzards circling overhead confirmed my suspicion. Rotting flesh is repugnant to all. And that is what Paul is talking about today. "Now the deeds of the flesh are quite obvious" (Moffatt).

We expect to see the works of the flesh in "this present evil world" (1:4). The world grinds out sin like a butcher grinds out sausage. But it's another thing to behold abominable behavior in the church! Paul wrote this letter to the churches of Galatia (1:2). What a sad thing it is to behold corruption in the church. And since we are a part of the church too, in our own lives. That's why we have to "die daily." We have to "crucify the flesh" and its evil desires (5:24). It is obvious to all when our behavior is more like the world than Christ. The works of the flesh are "manifest" (KJV).

Prayer/Hymn: "Holy Ghost, with light divine, shine upon this heart of mine; Chase the shades of night away, turn my darkness into day. Holy Ghost, with pow'r divine, cleanse this guilty heart of mine; Long hath sin without control, held dominion o'er my soul. Holy Spirit, all divine, dwell within this heart of mine; cast down every idol-throne, reign supreme and reign alone" (Andrew Reed).
