LIFE IN THE SPIRIT

Today we will begin a new Bible study series looking at Galatians 5:16-16. We are calling this series "Life in the Spirit." I'm glad to have join me in this short journey through Scripture.
"This is what I have to say: Let your steps be guided by the Spirit, and then you will never gratify the cravings of your earthly nature" (Gal. 5:16 TCNT). Paul's advice for believers in the first century is still excellent for believers in the twenty-first century. When we let (permit, allow, invite) the Holy Spirit to be our spiritual guide, our spiritual life will be so much more enriching and fulfilling.
We all struggle with the lust of the flesh. Temptation is all around us in "surround" sound" 24 hours a day. But notice what our text says. If we "walk in the Spirit" (NKJV) we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. It doesn't say we won't have temptation. It says we won't yield to temptation. If we "live our whole life in the Spirit" (Phillips) our passion to satisfy fleshly desires will be dulled, stymied, and stopped.
The Holy Spirit is called Holy for a good reason. We cannot be holy, think holy thoughts, speak holy words, or do holy deeds on our own. We need the indwelling, empowering presence of God's Holy Spirit to help us live in the Spirit. Heeding His inner promptings will keep us on the path to purity. Jesus called the Holy Spirit our "Helper" in John 14:26. For goodness sake (pun intended), let Him help you be all that God wants you to be! Don't be afraid to ask Him to help you overcome temptation. That's what He is here for! How silly it would be to have a Divine Helper and never ask Him for help when we need Him the most! Do not grieve Him, do not leave Him, but cleave to Him every moment of every day.
Prayer: Holy Father, thank You for giving us the gift of Your Holy Spirit to help us live a life that is pleasing to You. Through Christ we pray.
