BEHAVING DECENTLY

"Let us behave decently, as in the daytime..." (Romans 13:13-a NIV).
My grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Knowles, was born in Iowa in 1888. She saw a lot of changes in her life. Not all of them were for the better. One day in the 60s she saw a young woman walking down the street in scanty attire. Grandma was absolutely indignant. "Where's the law?" she fumed. It used to be that people kept their sinful behavior in reserve for the night hours. Not so anymore. "Gay" parades take place in broad daylight in some of America's cities.
Whether it is dress, demeanor, or decorum, Christian behavior is very important. "Let us behave with decency" (NEB). "Let us live honorably" (Goodspeed). "Let us walk becomingly" (ASV). "Let us walk properly" (NKJV). Moffat adds, "As in the open light of day." The "Sunshine Law" applies to Christians 24/7. When you are stuck in traffic, behave decently. When someone cuts in front of you at the checkout lane, behave decently. When you go on vacation, behave decently. When you are away from your family, behave decently. When you are on a church committee, behave decently. When you dress for warmer weather, behave decently. When you are at an office party, behave decently. After all, we are representatives of the King of kings. We are ambassadors for Christ. Yes, by all means, "Let us behave decently."
Prayer: Righteous Father, enable us to shine like stars in this world of wickedness. May we always represent You and Your Son well. Convict us by Your Spirit when our behavior is out of line. Through Christ we pray.
