"WAKE UP, PEOPLE!"

A popular soft drink company has an ad that has sleepy people being yelled at: "Wake up, people!" That is what Paul is saying to the slumbering saints in the church in Rome. "The hour is come for you to wake up from your slumber" (Romans 13:11-b NIV).

The KJV says, "It is high time to awake out of sleep." A Christian is engaged in spiritual warfare. We cannot go to sleep at our post. We must be awake and alert to the tactics of the enemy. We must also be alert to opportunities to advance the cause of the gospel.

Sometimes I have to fight sleep when I am on the road. Last Saturday night I was returning from a preaching trip in South Dakota. I had been up since 5 AM. I left the Kansas City airport at about 10:30 PM and it was past 1:30 AM when I arrived home in Joplin (actually 2:30 AM because of the switch to Daylight Savings Time). The last hour I could hardly stay awake. I slapped myself silly. I turned up the radio. I stopped and got a Coke. I was doing what the TCNT says: "Rouse yourselves from sleep." The Knox Version starts Romans 13:11 as follows: "Make no mistake about the age we live in." That's why we must "wake up, people!" The times are evil. The enemy is on the prowl. We dare not go to sleep on the job. "Wake up to reality" (Phillips).

Hymn: "Awake, my soul and sing of Him who died for thee, and hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity." (Matthew Bridges).
