WHEN YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY

"On the contrary: 'If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head'" (Romans 12:20 NIV).
In contrast with wreaking vengeance upon our enemies, we are advised here to treat our enemies with kindness. This is a quotation of Proverbs 25:21,22 which adds a phrase not found in Romans 12:12 - "and the LORD will reward you."
Not long ago one of our precious grandchildren wandered into the yard of a neighbor. The man turned on her and cursed her something terribly, even waving a chain saw at her. I should tell you that she is only four and the apple of my eye. When I heard what that cruel, profane man did I was very upset. I told my wife later, "It's a good thing I'm not God or that man would be on a greased slide to hell just for doing that!" She agreed - that it was a good thing I'm not God! I made a special trip to read her some stories from some of her favorite books that night. But our sweet daughter said she was going to bake her neighbors some cookies and take them over to them. I think that is what this verse is all about, don't you? Baked cookies in the tummy can become burning coals on the head!
Hymn/Prayer: "When my love for man grows weak, when for stronger faith I seek, Hill of Calvary I go, to thy scenes of fear and woe. Then to live I turn again, learning all the worth of pain, learning all the might that lies in a full self-sacrifice" (John R. Wreford).
