A REASON FOR RIGHT LIVING

"Be careful to do what is right in they eyes of everybody" (Romans 12: 17-b NIV).
The practice of righteousness is the theme of Romans 12. Those of us who have presented out bodies as a living sacrifice to God (v.1) want to do what is right in the eyes of God. A good child does not want to disappoint his or her father and we do not want to disappoint our Heavenly Father.
But our text today suggests another reason for right living. The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, but so are the eyes of everyone. Goodspeed translates this verse, "See that you are above reproach in the eyes of everyone." The New American Standard Bible puts a little different slant on it: "Respect what is right in the sight of all men." Elders of the church are expected to be "above reproach" but we should also live "above reproach." Children are watching. So are our neighbors. Fellow-workers are watching. Non-Christians are watching. Enemies are waiting to pounce. So we are thankful for today's text: Be careful...do what is right in the eyes of everyone. Ethics still matter!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, You are so good to us. We never want to disappoint you. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit so that we might exhibit goodness, faithfulness, and self-control. Through Christ we pray.
