DON'T BE A "KNOW-IT-ALL"

"And don't think you know it all!" (Romans 12:16-c, The Living Bible).
The old KJV says, "Do not be wise in your own conceits." People who are conceited think they know it all. Goodspeed and the NIV translate this verse, "Do not be conceited." Lord, deliver us from the sin of conceit!
A "know-it-all" rankles us. No matter the topic or subject, our "know-it-all" friends will interrupt the conversation and inject his or her superior knowledge. They want to be known for their knowledge. What you know makes no difference. They know better. They are smarter. You are dumber. That keeps them on top. They believe that "knowledge is power" and they want that heady, delicious, controlling power. The leadership of some churches can be "know-it-alls." They, too, know that "knowledge is power." But that is not the way of God.
The Bible says: "Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. The man who thinks he knows something does not yet know as he ought to know. But the man who loves God is known by God" (1 Cor 8:1-3 NIV). We are to grow in our knowledge of Christ
(2 Pet 3:18), but if we already "know it all" how can we grow at all? It is great to grow in knowledge, but let no one think that he knows it all!
Hymn/Prayer: "Purer in heart, O God, help me to be; that I Thy holy face one day may see. Keep me from secret sin, reign Thou my soul within; purer in heart, help me to be" (Mrs. A. L. Davison).
