SHARE THE TEARS

"Weep with those who weep" (Romans 12:15-b).
Someone once said that the curse of the modern church is unpaid tithes, unbent knees, and dry eyes. Tears start in the heart and then make their way down the cheeks of a man or a woman who is touched with the sorrows of another. Paul practiced what he preached. Look at the "three years of tears" passage in Acts 20:31. "Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears." He also wrote his epistles with "many tears" (2 Cor 2:4).
But here Paul is telling believers to share the sorrows of a fellow believer, even if that means shedding a few tears. I'll never forget a particularly dark day in my life when Don DeWelt came and sat with me the whole day. Few words were spoken but lots of sympathizing sighs. The shortest verse in the Bible is John 11:35, "Jesus wept." If our Lord wept, we must. When Stephen, the first Christian martyr, was carried to his burial, godly men "mourned deeply for him" (Acts 8:2). Do the sufferings of others touch your soul? Then let go and weep with those who weep. Your tears are better than words. So are embraces, a firm handshake, a hand on the shoulder. And always remember: "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning" (Proverbs 30:5). Amen.
Hymn: "We share our mutual woes, our mutual burdens bear; and often for each other flows the sympathizing tear" (John Fawcett).
