AN AWFUL ANNIVERSARY

Today marks an awful anniversary. It is the 75th anniversary of Adolf Hitler's coming to power in Berlin, Germany. Probably no one in Germany or Europe of the West could foresee the truly evil specter of Nazism that began in 1933 and would only end with multiplied millions murdered by 1945 (the year I was born).
I have made six trips to Poland, the "killing fields" for Hitler during World War II. Each time I go I have visited a few of the death camps. I believe I have been to 11 now. Each time I go I am appalled at the unspeakable horrors visited upon those poor souls (many of them children) who were shipped like cattle to killing centers like Treblinka, Auschwitz, and Sobibor. "Hate what is evil" (Romans 12:9 NIV). The problem was Hitler considered Jews "evil" - even "subhuman." So he took out his hatred on them. Sadly, the world did not "hate what is evil" - Hitler and Nazism. They stood by. They tried to appease him. They even failed to bomb the railroads leading to those hellish places of slaughter. How many millions could have been spared? Why didn't the West - who knew full well what was going on in those hellholes - doing something? They tolerated evil until evil almost swallowed up all of Europe. What have we learned in the last 75 years? Hardly anything. Rwanda. The Kurds. Darfur. Dire warnings from a madman in Iran. Ho hum. What's the latest with Britney Spears or American Idol? Who will win the Super Bowl? Politicians sniping at each other. Stop the world! I want to get off! May God have mercy!
Prayer: Holy Father, we are appalled at the evil that still exists, growing stronger each day, in this "present evil world." Give us a righteous hatred of evil, wherever it exists. Give us courage to speak up to those who are "at ease in Zion." Bless all the dear children who will die this day because of evil warlords. Through Christ we cry!
