THE #1 MARK OF THE TRUE CHRISTIAN

I selected Romans 12 to start out our "Honey from the Rock" daily Bible devotions in 2008 because I believe this chapter contains some of the best material in all of the Bible as to how a Christian is to think and live. We are not going to rush through this chapter, but take one verse at a time. Sometimes we feel like we have to read a certain amount of the Bible each day in order to keep on schedule. May I remind you that it is better to spend quality time in God's Word than to speed-read Scripture.

"Let love be genuine" (Rom. 12:9 ESV). Surely love is the greatest mark of a true Christian. Some are obsessed with the Mark of the Beast. I want to have the Mark of the Best. Jesus said that our love for each other was the true sign of being His disciple (John 13:34,35). Our love should be genuine. Not feigned or faked. It should be without hypocrisy (ASV). When you tell someone you love them, mean it. Let your love be sincere (TCNT). The first fruit of the Spirit is love (Gal. 5:22). In fact, "God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us" (Rom. 5:5 ESV). This is why it is so important for us not to grieve the Spirit or quench the Spirit in our lives. When we think and walk and talk by the Spirit we can be sure that our love will be genuine, sincere, and without hypocrisy. Our love will then be a genuine 1 Corinthians 13 love - patient, kind, bearing all things, believing all things, hoping all things, enduring all things. Our love will not be envious, boastful, arrogant, rude, insisting on our own way [that would put an end to 90% of church fusses!], irritable, or resentful. The indwelling presence of Holy Spirit, then, is the key to genuine love - the #1 mark of the true Christian.
