ONE BODY, SEPARATE FUNCTIONS

"For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another" (Romans 12:4,5 NAS.

The church body is likened unto a human body. Your body has a variety of members and each one has a different function. Would you fault your ear for not seeing or your eye for not hearing? Ridiculous. Your mind thinks, your tongue talks, your hand writes, your knees bend, your feet walk. They are contributing to the good of the whole body. We would not think of deriding a member of our body for not functioning in another realm. Why should we think that in the church body everyone should function the same - or do something they were not equipped for or gifted to do?

Notice that Paul says, "So we, who are many, are one body in Christ." That really should make all the difference in how we view, appreciate, and praise other members of the body. It is Christ's body! How dare we malign a member of the body of Christ? How dare we denigrate someone who belongs to Christ's body? One day I was in a restaurant with some fellows and someone started knocking a particular church. My friend Joe Garman interrupted and said, "Men, we are talking about the bride of Christ! How dare we rip the bride of Christ!" That is good, sound advice for all of us.

Prayer: Holy Father, how wonderful is Your church, the body and bride of Christ. Help us to appreciate the diversity of gifts You have given the individual members of the one body of Christ! Through Christ we pray.
