RIGHT THINKING ABOUT SELF

Thinking is an important aspect of the Christian life. Every word or deed was once a thought. There is good thinking and there is bad thinking. Our text today tells us how we should think about ourself. It flies in the face of CW (conventional wisdom).
"For through the grace given to me I say to every man among you not to think more highly of himself that he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has alloted to each a measure of faith" (Romans 12:3 NAS
.
This is a verse for us all. We ought to have thoughts about ourselves if we are living the Christian life as we should. But caution is given concerning having too high an estimation of self. My friend Tom Burgess once told me, "Victor, you're not as bad as your enemies say you are, but you're not as good as your friends say you are." That keeps you humble! So, how should we think of ourselves? Not too high but not too low either. One extreme leads to self-effacement and the other to self-debasement. Truth is always found between the extremes. "Think of yourself with sober judgment" (NIV).
Prayer: Father, thank You for the grace you have given me. Now help me to think of myself as You would have me think, soberly and sincerely. Thank You for the faith you have measured to me to do this. Through Christ we pray.
