THE PROBLEM WITH THE WORLD

"And do not be conformed to this world..." (Romans 12:2 NKJV).

Since our "reasonable service" or "true worship" is presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice to God, we are not to be conformed to this world. God wants us as His own but so does the world. So two powers are after us: a holy God and an unholy world. Which will we submit ourselves to?

The problem with the world is that it offers us nothing good for our spiritual side. In fact, everything if offers to us is opposed to the will of God. This is why there are so many warnings about the world in Scripture. The apostle John wrote, "Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world - the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life - is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it, but he who does the will of God abides forever" (1 John 2:15-17). If we have truly presented our bodies as a living sacrifice to God then we will say "No!" when the world seeks us to conform to its standards rather than God's. Live above the world. Live on a higher plane. Live for God. Realize that the world is passing away - destined for doom. Others may conform but you don't have to. You are a living sacrifice
and surely there are worldly things we can gladly sacrifice to live closer to God.

Hymn/Prayer: My heart has no desire to stay where doubts arise and fears dismay; though some may dwell where these abound, my prayer, my aim, is higher ground. Lord, life me up and let me stand, by faith, on heaven's tableland, a higher plane than I have found; Lord, plant my feet on higher ground. (Johnson Oatman, Jr.
