An old Christmas carol says, "Good Christian men, rejoice/With heart and soul and voice; Give ye heed to what we say: News! News! Jesus Christ is born today!" (Latin carol, 14th century). I am sure the hymnist did not mean to exclude good Christian women from rejoicing and singing this song too!

The day Christ was born was the greatest day in the history of mankind up to that time. The long expected Messiah had come to earth at last. Old Simeon held the Christchild in his hands and said, "Now let me depart in peace since my eyes have seen Your salvation." He understood the import of the moment. Do we?

This is not just another day in the church calendar or any other calendar for that matter. Your calendar has December 25 in red - and there is a reason for that red color. Red is the color of blood, of salvation. Christ came to give His life as a ransom for our sins. He was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. He was born to die - for your sins and mine. He trod the wine press alone - to atone for our sins. The real Christmas tree is the tree of Calvary where Jesus took our sins upon Himself and died as a substitute for you and me. Thanks be to God for this Unspeakable Gift!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we lift up our hands in thanks to You today for sending us Your Only Begotten Son to earth - born of a virgin, living a sinless life, dying an atoning death, raised by Your power on the third day, ascended into Heaven where He sits at Your right hand interceding daily for us! We rejoice in the news we never tire of hearing — Jesus Christ is born today! In His Name we pray, Amen!
