"So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom" (Psalm 90:12).

I was born on this day, November 23, 1945. World War II had come to an end. My life had just begun. I was born in Seymour, Ind., near North Vernon where my father was the minister of the North Vernon Church of Christ. My mother, who is now with the Lord, was also born in Indiana. My grandparents on her side lived in Richmond, Ind. Both are also with the Lord. During my years at home I have lived in the following states: Ind., Ill., Iowa, Idaho, Missouri, and Nebraska. Growing up a "PK" anywhere was home and it normally was a church parsonage. I made lots of friends going to school wherever we moved.

Verse 10 says, "The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away." That's kind of somber, isn't it? I was thinking the other day that life is like the game of baseball. If you know me at all, you know I love the grand old game. (My heroes were Stan Musial in the N.L. and Mickey Mantle in the A.L.) Think of it this way. You have a baseball diamond made up of home plate, first base, second base, third base, and then home plate again. If we live to be eighty (and most men don't), it goes like this. When you get to first base you are 20; when you get to second base you are 40; when you get to third base you are sixty; when you cross home plate you are 80. So here I am at 62. That means I am edging off third, looking at home.
How did I get to third base so soon? Job said, "My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle" (Job 7:6). I saw a weaver once. The shuttle flew before my eyes. That's life. No wonder David declared, "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom."

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank You for the gift of life. Thank You for giving me such good parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, a brother, three sisters, so many friends growing up. Thank you for all of my mentors in school, camp, and college. Thank you for the gift of my wonderful wife, six children, and ten grandchildren. Keep me from getting picked off third. Bring me safely home. Call me "safe at home" through Christ our Lord I pray.
