"With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the Lord: 'He is good; his love to Israel endures forever.' And all the people gave a shout of praise to the Lord..." (Ezra 3:11 NIV).

Israel had a great day of thanksgiving the day the restoration of the temple in Jerusalem began. Those of us here in America have had a great day of thanksgiving ever since the Pilgrims came over from England to worship God unrestricted from the fetters of state religion from whence they came.

Did you know the Pilgrims made 7 times more graves than houses when they came? Westermayer states, "No Americans have been more impoverished that these who, nevertheless, set aside a day of thanksgiving." William Jennings Bryan said, "On Thanksgiving we acknowledge our dependence." We depend upon God for His heavenly blessings. Alexander Pope put it this way in a little poem:

Our rural ancestors, with little blest,
Patient of labors when the end was rest,
Indulged the day that housed their annual grain,
With feasts, and off'rings, and a thankful strain.

Hymn: 'We gather together to ask the Lord's blessing; He chastens and hastens His will to make known; the wicked oppressing now cease from distressing, Sing praises to His name: He forgets not His own" (Netherlands Folk Hymn; translated by Theodore Baker).

Thank God for Thanksgiving Day!
