A THANKFUL MAN

"And be thankful" (Colossians 3:15).
William Law said, "Would you know who is the greatest saint? It is not the man who prays most or who does most. It is the man who is most thankful." Someone has said that to be thankful (in the sense of Scripture) is to be thankful in every ordinary day. It is to bear our routine burdens cheerfully, to meet our common sorrows without murmuring, to feel the hand of God in everything. "He who is rarely clean is not a clean man and he who is rarely thankful is not a thankful man!"
Another way of saying it is: "It is not the happy people who are thankful; it is the thankful people who are happy." God wants us to be a thankful people, always possessing a thankful spirit. I remember a story about Matthew Henry, the great Bible commentator. One night he was robbed. That night he entered into his diary these words. "Let me be thankful. First, because I was never robbed before. Second, because although they took my purse, they did not take my life. Third, because they took my all, it was not much. Fourth, because it was I who was robbed, not I who robbed." This is a wonderful example of the biblical admonition, "In everything give thanks."
Song: "Count your blessings, name them one by one; count your blessings, see what God hath done" (Johnson Oatman).
