"...of whom the world was not worthy...all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promises, God having provided something better for us that they should not be made perfect apart from us" (Hebrews 11:38,39 NKJV).

Truer words were never spoken. The "Faith Chapter" ends with these words - words that touch our very soul, humble us, and make us want to live a more triumphant life. Pick it up in verse 35, will you? "Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance." Did you get that? They could have opted out of torture, but they chose not to. Why? "That they might obtain a better resurrection." Every think about that - "a better resurrection"? They certainly deserve it, don't they?

Go on to verse 36. "Still others had trials of mockings and scourgings [remember the horrible scourging scene in Gibson's "Passion of the Christ"?], yes, and of chains and imprisonment. The were stoned, they were sawn in two [some say Isaiah the prophet died in this manner], were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented...They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth." Christian, no more whining! Behold, the awesome power of faith in the lives of these unnamed, unsung heroes!

Hymn: "Am I a soldier of the cross, a follower of the Lamb? And shall I fear to own His cause, or blush to speak His name? Must I be carried to the skies on flow'ry beds of ease; while others fought to win the prize, and sailed through bloody seas?" (Isaac Watts).
