"Who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear" (Hebrews 5:7 NKJV).

Have you ever prayed with "vehement cries and tears" to God? Jesus did. I imagine this was when He was praying in the garden of Gethsemane, beseeching God to take this cup from Him. Most of our prayers are quiet and contemplative. But sometimes our prayers are loud and tear-filled. I have cried out to God in an empty church sanctuary, in a car while driving, on the top of a mountain.

What encourages me in today's text are three simple words - "and was heard." God heard the loud cries of His Son just as any good father would. It helps to know that God hears our prayers. He may not answer them the way we think He should, or in the time frame that we think they should be answered, but never doubt that your prayers are not heard. It helps to be heard. God "hears us out" when we cry out to Him - if we are living lives of "reverent submission" (NIV) like Jesus did.

Hymn: "'Tis midnight, and for other's guilt the Man of Sorrows weeps in blood; Yet He that hath in anguish knelt is not forsaken by His God." (William B. Tappan)
