"For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard it did not combine it with faith" (Hebrews 4:2 NIV).

I have just returned from a week of preaching in Virginia. Tomorrow I will leave for northern Missouri for another week of preaching. Anywhere any preacher preaches he is faced with the truth of our text for today. The messages preached will be of no value to some because they will not combine faith with what they hear.

Tens of thousands of church goers every Sunday morning will make the mistake of ancient Israel. They heard Moses himself preach! But they did not mix his message with their faith. They heard but did not believe. Because they did not believe, they did not obey. Because they did not obey, they did not receive all the blessings they could have had from the Lord. Are we any different today? You can have the gospel preached to you all your life and still wind up lost if you do not combine that message with personal faith! Let us do better than our spiritual ancestors!
