"Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience" (Hebrews 4:11 NIV).

After 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, only Joshua, Caleb and kin were allowed to enter Canaan. The rest, because of their failure to take God at His word, fell short. I wonder how they felt about that? So near and yet so far!

You and I should do our best to enter that rest. The "rest" that remains for the children of God is Heaven itself. Do your best to enter that rest! The NIV says "make every effort." Anything worth possessing takes effort. You will not gain Heaven by resting on your laurels. No one who is a lackluster, disinterested, disengaged, disobedient, hit-and-miss church member should expect to be given the Crown of Life. That "rest" of which the writer speaks is for those who give and do their best!

Hymn: "Hear ye the Master's call, 'Give Me thy best!' For, be it great or small, that is His test. Do then the best you can, not for reward. Not for the praise of man, but for the Lord. Every work for Jesus will be blest, but He asks from every one his best. Our talents may be few, these may be small, but unto Him is due our best, our all" (S. C. Kirk).
