THE DANGER OF DRIFTING

"We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away" (Hebrews 2:1 NIV).
A boat that is not securely anchored is in danger of drifting away. A life that is not spiritually anchored is in danger of drifting and crashing on the rocks or going over the falls. So the writer encourages us to pay more careful attention to what we have heard, i.e., the message of God in His word.
How easy it is to go to church, listen to the sermon, and forget what we have heard before we even arrive home or to the restaurant. I used to quiz my children on the way home from church and was always delighted to hear them repeat the text and the main points I had tried to make. The Word of God will not drift from us but we can drift from the Word of God. I take notes when I listen to a sermon. I often underline passages in the Bible when I am reading or listening. These are little things but they help me "pay more careful attention" to what I have heard or read.
At one church where I preached the young people diligently took notes and often shared them with me after church was over. What a delight they were to me and I trust to God!
Hymn: "We have an anchor that keeps the soul steadfast and sure while the billows roll, fastened to the Rock which cannot move, grounded firm and deep in the Savior's love" (Priscilla J. Owens).
