HELPS FROM HEBREWS

"God...spoke in times past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son..." (Hebrews 1:1,2 NKJV).
This week we start a new series of devotions that I am calling "Helps from Hebrews." I like a book that starts out, literally, with God. Genesis begins, "In the beginning God" but the letter to the Hebrews starts with God in the beginning. Now, what did God do? In times past He spoke. That is encouraging, isn't it? Who wants to serve a god who cannot articulate himself? To whom did He speak to? Our forefathers. How? By, or through the prophets - you know, Isaiah, Jonah, Micah, et all. That's why they often said, "Thus saith the Lord."
God is still speaking! When? In these last days. They are the last days, you know! Who wants to face the last days with a god who cannot tell us what is coming down the pike? By whom does He speak to us today? Ah! "By His Son." Those three words give me all the assurance I need. You don't need the New York Times or CNN to tell you what it's all about. All you need is Jesus. Listen to what He said. "The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life" (John 6:63). No wonder the Big Fisherman, Peter, exclaimed, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life" (John 6:68). No one else does.
God spoke. God is still speaking. By His Son! Are you listening?
