A HARD COMMAND

"Also you shall destroy all the peoples whom the LORD your God delivers over to you; your eye shall have no pity on them; nor shall you serve their gods, for that will be a snare unto you" (Deut. 7:16 NKJV).
This may have been the most difficult command for Israel to obey. The rationale for such an edict was given earlier. "For they will turn your son away from following Me, to serve other gods" (v. 4). The total elimination of their enemies was the only answer.
You and I have an enemy too. Actually, three big enemies: the world, the flesh, and the devil. We can't do away with the world or the devil but we can do something about the flesh. Strange as it may sound, God gives us a "hard command" that is similar to what he asked of Israel. "Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleaness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming..." (Col. 3:5,6a). When we allow these enemies of God to linger in our lives, we are in danger of serving other gods. Put them to death with the help of the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:1-11). And do it today!
Prayer: Holy Father, help us in our weakness to be strong in You in the power of Your Spirit to do all that You in wisdom and love ask of us. Through Christ we pray.
