"If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the LORD your God will keep his covenant of love with you, as he swore to your forefathers" (Deut. 7:12 NIV).

How many times did I hear "Victor, pay attention!" from my mother and my teachers in school? Way too often! We are still children in this respect. God says to us, "Pay attention!" Israel had to be reminded to pay attention to God's instructions. So do we.

Notice that God's covenant with Israel was conditional. "If you pay attention to My instructions and are careful to follow them." Then God says He will keep His covenant of love with them. There are consequences for obedience and there are consequences for disobedience (see the rest of the chapter and especially Deut. 28). God is not obliged to keep His covenant of love with those who disregard or disobey His teachings. Our attention span and obedience level may well determine whether we are in covenant with Him or out of covenant.

Prayer: Loving Father, fill me with Your love so that I may be careful to follow Your instructions this day. Through Christ I pray.
