THE GREAT COVENANT KEEPER

"Keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands" (Deut. 7:9c NIV).
I have heard mockers call Christians "covenant keepers." But God Himself is a "covenant keeper." When He makes a covenant with one person or many, He is faithful and keeps that which He has promised. He would never thinking of breaking His covenant or promises. Notice here that it is called a covenant of LOVE, not law. Those who say the God of the Old Testament is only a God of law need to read this passage carefully. God's love flows like a river of redemption throughout Deuteronomy.
We, however, must take note that God's covenant of love is conditional. It is for "those who love him and keep his commands." God's covenant of love is for those who gratefully receive His love and return it to Him, demonstrated by a faithful and holy life. This truth is repeated in Nehemiah's prayer (Neh. 1:5). And notice how far reaching is His great love - "to a thousand generations." That includes you today, my friend!
Prayer: O God how grateful we are that You keep Your covenant of love with those who love You and keep Your word - even to a thousand generations, yes, even to me! Through Christ we pray.
