"...a special treasure above all peoples on the face of the earth" (Deut. 7:6c NKJV).

This is the third use of "people" in this passage. (1) A holy people. (2) A chosen/special people. (3) Above all peoples. The NIV reads, "God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession." Israel was something special. Out of all the people God could have chosen, he chose them. Truly, they were above all peoples in that regard.

We are not to think more highly of ourselves than we ought to think, but when God thinks that highly of His people that should do something for our "self-esteem." Really, it is God-esteem. This is God's estimation of His people. His people remain the salt of the earth and the light of the world. We are the godly leaven of the world. Tomorrow we shall see why God selected Israel to be His treasured possession but for now just sit back and revel in the thought that God is, has been, and always will be for His people. He is saying to us three times in this verse, "Up with people! I have chosen you. You are special to me." Or, in the words of Deut. 14:2 NIV, "Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the LORD has chosen you to be his treasured possession." Personalize this passage: "God has chosen me to be his treasured possession!"

Prayer/Praise: "I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice, and it told Thy love to me; but I long to rise in the arms of faith, and be closer drawn to Thee" (Fanny J. Crosby)
