"EVANDALISM!"

"This is what you are to do to them: Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones, cut down their Asherah poles and burn their idols in the fire" (Deut. 7:5 NIV).

This is quite a stunning command God gave to Israel. They were given the O.K. to be "vandals" - to practice what I like to call "evandalism." When Israel came into the land God promised them He knew they would have to do some "clearing of the ground." The towering Asherah poles, consecrated to a female goddess, were planted deep in the ground. Sin was deeply ingrained in Canaan. When Gideon chopped down his father's wooden images he had to do it at night because of fear what might happen to him if he were caught dismantling the idols (Judges 6:27).

So, are there any altars that need broken down in your life? Any sacred stones that need smashed? Any idols you need to cast into the fire? Deep down we know what tempts us and what is almost ingrained in our flesh. Will we "dare to be a Daniel" and not only refuse to bow down to modern exhibitions of idolatry but go another step and eradicate them from our lives? Does the church today need another "iconoclastic revival?"

Hymn/Prayer: "Lord Jesus, I long to be perfectly whole; I want Thee forever to live in my soul. Break down every idol, cast out every foe. Now wash me and I shall be whiter than snow" (James Nicholson)
