"When the LORD your God brings you into the land which you go to possess, and has cast out many nations before you....seven nations greater and mightier than you, and when the LORD your God delivers them over to you, you shall conquer them and utterly destroy them..." (Deut. 7:1-2 NKJV).

Today we begin a new series in the 7th chapter of Deuteronomy, one of the great chapters in the Old Testament. Israel was God's chosen people. Notice all that God did for them. He brought them into the land. He cast out the nations before them. He delivered them to Israel. All they had to do was follow His directions implicitly.

The land they entered was a land given over to idolatry. They were to have no other gods before them. Nor were they to create for themselves graven images (Deut. 5:6,7). Yet, idolatry became Israel's besetting sin. The N.T. tells us that covetousness is idolatry (Col. 3:5). This is the challenge that we face today - living in a land that is wholly given over to modern-day idolatry (covetousness). But through the power of God we can conquer covetousness and utterly eradicate it from our lives. God has chosen us to live a life free of idolatry. How? "Put to death your members which are upon the earth...(including) covetousness, which is idolatry" (Col. 3:5). Just as Israel was to conquer and destroy, we must conquer and destroy in the power of God.

Prayer: Father, thank You for going before us and dispelling our enemies. Empower us to conquer the sin of idolatry that ever seeks to ensnare us. Through Christ we pray.
