Worthless Things

"Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, and revive me in Your way" (Psalm 119:37 NKJV). This stanza starts with the 5th letter of the Hebrew alphabet, HE.
What are "worthless things?" Most of what the world offers us. Money. Sex. Power. Vain glory. In fact, some translations have "vanity" in place of "worthless things." Solomon tells us that "all is vanity" in his book of Ecclesiastes. Vance Havner once called TV "a vast wasteland." And that was long before Cable TV or Dish TV!
The Psalmist knew he needed help and so he made this request: "Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things." Have you ever prayed that prayer? He also knew that he needed a revival in his inner man. So he prayed, "Revive (quicken) me in Your way." We know what is worthless and we know what is not. Focus today on the things that are of worth: your family, your eternal home, things that will nurture your inner spirit.
Prayer: Holy Father, please help us from being distracted by worthless things and stir within us a desire for things of worth. Through Christ we pray.
Hymn: "I am resolved no longer to linger charmed by the world's delight; things that are higher, things that are nobler, these have allured by sight" (Palmer Hartsough).
